Politics, Perseverance and Public Service: The Leadership Journey of Maryam Nawaz

Published on: June 7, 2026 3:47 AM

June 7, 2026 by Saif Awan

Politics is fundamentally a journey of struggle, perseverance, and public service. Unfortunately, a particular segment of society has reduced it to propaganda, personal attacks, and character assassination. True political leaders uphold dignity, respect one another’s honour, and engage in constructive criticism aimed at reform rather than destruction. They do not abandon their leadership during difficult times; instead, they stand firm like a rock in support of their party and its principles.

Political leaders have always faced challenges and adversity. History shows that those who remain steadfast during difficult times eventually succeed, while those who lose courage often fade away. Politics is a field for the brave, not for the faint-hearted. During the tenure of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) experienced one of the most challenging periods in its history, comparable to the hardships faced during the era of General Pervez Musharraf. Despite these circumstances, with only a few exceptions, party members remained more committed than ever to Nawaz Sharif and the party’s ideology. PML-N was not merely a political organisation; it was a deeply rooted political movement with a strong grassroots presence. As a result, it could neither be dismantled nor eliminated.

Given Shah Ghulam Qadir’s unwavering loyalty, long-standing commitment, and remarkable contribution to strengthening the party in Azad Kashmir, there is a growing opinion among party workers that he should be considered for the position of Prime Ministerial candidate.

From the party leadership to ordinary workers, PML-N members endured immense political pressure and hardships during the PTI government. It was in these circumstances that Maryam Nawaz emerged as a pivotal force, steering the party out of political isolation and helping it regain its position in the corridors of power.

Those who underestimated Maryam Nawaz as a weak political figure employed various tactics to pressure and intimidate her. However, she remained resilient. Rather than becoming a weakness for her father, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, she became one of his strongest pillars of support. During the PTI government, Maryam Nawaz spent time in prison on two occasions despite maintaining her innocence. Although she was entitled to privileged facilities, she chose not to avail herself of special treatment and endured imprisonment under the same conditions as ordinary inmates. At no point did she seek to benefit from her status as the daughter of a former prime minister, nor did she succumb to political pressure. Since 2014, Maryam Nawaz has been the target of sustained character-assassination campaigns. Yet these efforts failed to weaken her. Instead, they strengthened her resolve and enabled her to emerge as a more determined and influential political leader. More than two years have passed since Maryam Nawaz assumed office as Chief Minister of Punjab. During this period, she has undertaken initiatives that many believe surpass the achievements of previous administrations. Among the most notable measures are the establishment of the Para Force to combat encroachments and maintain civic order, and the creation of the Crime Control Department (CCD) to tackle organised crime, narcotics trafficking, and lawlessness.

Today, Punjab presents a significantly different law-and-order landscape. Criminal elements, drug traffickers, and habitual offenders have found themselves under unprecedented scrutiny. One of Maryam Nawaz’s most significant commitments has been ensuring the safety and dignity of women. She pledged that no one would be allowed to threaten the honour and security of Punjab’s mothers, sisters, and daughters. Many observers view this commitment as a key factor behind the decline in crime and the improved sense of public security across the province. Those who once doubted her ability to govern Pakistan’s largest province have witnessed her administrative capabilities firsthand. Her governance model and public welfare initiatives are increasingly being studied and replicated by other provinces, reflecting the growing recognition of her leadership approach.

History offers a parallel example. During General Musharraf’s rule, when PML-N faced severe challenges, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz stepped forward to lead the party and guide it through a difficult political landscape. Similarly, when PML-N encountered challenges in Azad Jammu and Kashmir during the PTI era, many individuals chose silence or political withdrawal. At that critical juncture, Nawaz Sharif entrusted the leadership of the party in Azad Kashmir to Shah Ghulam Qadir, a loyal and dedicated party worker. Through continuous political engagement and tireless campaigning, Shah Ghulam Qadir revitalised the party and restored its popularity across Azad Kashmir. The renewed public strength that PML-N enjoys in the region today owes much to its efforts and leadership.

With the next Azad Kashmir elections approaching, political preparations are already underway. Nawaz Sharif has repeatedly emphasised that those who stood by the party during difficult times deserve priority and recognition, while those who abandoned it in moments of adversity should not expect preferential treatment upon their return.

Given Shah Ghulam Qadir’s unwavering loyalty, long-standing commitment, and remarkable contribution to strengthening the party in Azad Kashmir, there is a growing opinion among party workers that he should be considered for the position of Prime Ministerial candidate. Such a decision would not only acknowledge his dedication but would also boost the morale of grassroots workers and reinforce the party’s image as an organisation that rewards loyalty and perseverance. Recently, reports emerged regarding a major surgical procedure undergone by Maryam Nawaz. We pray for her complete and speedy recovery and hope that she will soon resume her official responsibilities and continue her mission of serving the people of Punjab with the same energy, commitment, and vision that have defined her leadership journey.
