Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Atwan, spokesperson for Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence, described the incident as an act of aggression that resulted in significant material damage to the terminal building. Authorities said assessments of the damage were ongoing.
Following the attack, Kuwait’s civil aviation authorities suspended airport operations and redirected incoming flights to alternative destinations as a precautionary measure. The temporary closure was implemented to ensure passenger safety and allow emergency crews to secure the affected area.
The incident marks the latest escalation in regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Kuwait, a longstanding US ally in the Gulf region, has faced growing security concerns since the outbreak of hostilities earlier this year.
Iran has previously accused Kuwait of facilitating US military operations by allowing American forces access to facilities on its territory, allegations that have heightened diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The reported attack comes amid a broader pattern of missile and drone incidents across the Gulf region, affecting military installations, commercial shipping routes and civilian infrastructure. Regional governments have increased security measures in response to the evolving situation.
Aviation and security experts warn that attacks targeting civilian infrastructure could further disrupt regional travel and economic activity, while raising concerns about the safety of key transportation hubs.
