Nawaz Sharif vows development push for Gilgit-Baltistan

Published on: June 2, 2026 6:09 PM

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has pledged to accelerate development and economic growth in Gilgit-Baltistan, saying the region deserves greater attention after years of neglect. Addressing a public gathering in Gilgit, he emphasized that his political approach is based on performance and public service rather than criticism of political rivals, urging voters to assess leaders through their work and achievements.

During his speech, Nawaz Sharif questioned why Gilgit-Baltistan had not received adequate focus despite its strategic importance and vast potential. He said the region holds a special place in his heart and recalled his long-standing connection with Gilgit, Skardu, and surrounding areas. Furthermore, he stressed that balanced development is essential to improving living standards and creating new opportunities for local communities.

Highlighting infrastructure challenges, the former prime minister pointed to outdated airport facilities and announced that he would ask Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to expand the airport for jet operations. He also expressed concern over prolonged electricity shortages, stating that daily load shedding lasting 10 to 12 hours remains unacceptable and requires immediate attention regardless of political considerations.

Nawaz Sharif also outlined his vision for economic progress, arguing that increased trade and improved connectivity could transform Gilgit-Baltistan into a more prosperous region. He said future development projects would be designed in consultation with local stakeholders to ensure that investments meet regional needs and deliver long-term benefits for businesses, communities, and the wider economy.

Referring to his previous development record, Nawaz Sharif cited the completion of the Lowari Tunnel project, which had remained unfinished for decades before being completed during his tenure. He said the same commitment and determination would be applied to development initiatives in Gilgit-Baltistan, with a focus on infrastructure, connectivity, and public welfare projects.

The PML-N leader further stated that if his party returns to power, he intends to visit Gilgit-Baltistan every two to three months to monitor development projects personally. He also reflected on key moments in his political career, mentioning his removal from office, imprisonment, and exile, while reaffirming his commitment to public service and regional development.
