PM Shehbaz seeks stronger EU partnership

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and European Union official Kaja Kallas reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation during talks in Islamabad. The meeting matters because it focused on trade, security, and regional stability. The discussions affect Pakistan-EU relations, economic partnerships, and diplomatic engagement.

Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, met the prime minister at the Prime Minister House. Senior Pakistani officials attended the meeting, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Both sides reviewed the current state of relations and discussed opportunities for broader cooperation.

During the meeting, Shehbaz welcomed Kallas and emphasized Pakistan’s desire to strengthen its multifaceted partnership with the European Union. He expressed satisfaction with the eighth round of the Pakistan-EU Strategic Dialogue. He also reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, climate change, security, migration, sustainable development, and connectivity.

Furthermore, the prime minister highlighted the importance of the GSP Plus scheme in boosting trade between Pakistan and the European Union. He said the arrangement continues to play a vital role in strengthening economic ties. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including efforts to promote peace in the Gulf region.

Kallas praised Pakistan’s contribution to regional peace and expressed the European Union’s interest in deepening strategic relations. Shehbaz also shared Pakistan’s perspective on South Asia and Afghanistan. In addition, he conveyed good wishes for European leaders and renewed invitations for them to visit Pakistan.
