
BEIJING: Pakistan and China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation against terrorism and enhancing strategic coordination following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to China from May 23 to 26.
A joint statement issued after the visit highlighted agreements reached during meetings between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

The two countries reiterated that no group, including the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, would be allowed to use any territory to undermine regional security or carry out terrorist activities.

According to the statement, both sides agreed to maintain close coordination on Afghanistan-related matters and further deepen strategic cooperation under the China-Pakistan partnership.
Pakistan reaffirmed its support for the “One China” policy and expressed backing for China’s position on Taiwan. In return, China reiterated its support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security.
The statement also underscored both countries’ commitment to advancing high-quality development under CPEC 2.0 and transforming Gwadar Port into a regional connectivity hub.
Both sides agreed to strengthen land connectivity through the Khunjerab Pass and continue phased work on the Karakoram Highway Thakot-Raikot project. China also invited third countries to participate in CPEC-related initiatives.
The two countries further agreed to expand cooperation in textiles, home appliances, minerals, oil and gas, agriculture, artificial intelligence and the digital economy. China also announced 3,000 training opportunities for Pakistan between 2025 and 2029.

In a significant development, the statement noted that two Pakistani astronauts may receive training in China, potentially becoming the first foreign astronauts to visit China’s space station.
Pakistan and China additionally pledged to enhance defence and counterterrorism cooperation while strengthening security measures for Chinese citizens and projects operating in Pakistan.
The statement also highlighted support for the United Nations’ central role in global affairs and stressed the importance of peace and stability in South Asia.
