The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday issued notices to the accused in a case involving the alleged honour killing of a young woman in Rawalpindi for contracting a marriage of her choice, and adjourned the hearing until the first week of June.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi heard the case. The bench also included Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui and Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb.
During the hearing, Additional Advocate General Punjab Ahmad Raza Gilani informed the court that the woman, who had entered into a love marriage, was allegedly called back from Kashmir and killed following a decision by a jirga.
He told the bench that the victim had already been buried after the murder.
The Chief Justice asked whether notices should be issued to the accused in the matter, to which the provincial law officer responded that notices were necessary and the bail granted to the accused should be cancelled.
The court subsequently issued notices to the accused on appeals filed by the Punjab Prosecution Department seeking cancellation of their bail and adjourned further proceedings.
The court was informed that the case had been registered at Pirwadhai Police Station in Rawalpindi, while the FIR was lodged in July 2025.
According to the prosecution, the woman was allegedly killed in front of family members over her marriage by choice. The prosecution further stated that female relatives later bathed the body and transported it to a graveyard in a loader rickshaw for burial.
The Punjab Prosecution Department has approached the apex court seeking cancellation of bail granted to accused Zafarullah and others.
