Prince Harry Netflix project sparks fresh political controversy

Published on: May 18, 2026 7:51 PM

Prince Harry has become the center of fresh political debate after details emerged about his upcoming Netflix war drama project focusing on British troops in Afghanistan. The production has attracted widespread attention because some commentators believe the film indirectly responds to remarks made by Donald Trump regarding NATO forces during the Afghan conflict. However, sources close to the project insist the adaptation was not designed as a political message.

The Duke of Sussex and his production team are reportedly developing a screen adaptation of the bestselling memoir “No Way Out: The Searing True Story of Men Under Siege.” The book was written by British Army Major Adam Jowett and recounts the experiences of a small British military unit trapped under heavy Taliban attacks in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province during 2006. The story focuses on the intense battle for Musa Qala and the hardships faced by soldiers on the ground.

The controversy surrounding the project intensified after Trump previously questioned the frontline role played by NATO allies during the Afghanistan war. During comments made earlier this year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump suggested allied troops often remained away from the most dangerous combat zones. His remarks triggered criticism from veterans and military supporters across several NATO countries, including the United Kingdom, where thousands of troops served alongside American forces.

Meanwhile, individuals connected to the production rejected claims that the film intentionally challenges Trump’s comments about allied military contributions. Sources involved with the project stated that Prince Harry’s personal military experience naturally created a strong connection with NATO troops who served in Afghanistan during the conflict. Harry himself completed two military deployments in Afghanistan and has frequently spoken publicly about the sacrifices made by service members during the war.

In addition, the film adaptation has gained attention because it will be written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Matt Charman, known for his work on the acclaimed movie Bridge of Spies. Industry observers expect the project to focus heavily on realism, emotional depth, and the psychological impact of combat rather than large-scale action sequences. The memoir itself is widely recognized for presenting an unfiltered account of one of the Afghan war’s most dangerous operations.

Prince Harry’s latest Netflix project also renews public attention on his long-standing support for veterans and military communities following his royal exit from official duties. While debates continue over whether the production carries political undertones, supporters argue the film mainly honors the bravery and sacrifices of British and allied troops. The project is expected to further strengthen Harry’s involvement in storytelling focused on military service and personal resilience.
