Sindh govt approves 500 electric buses for Karachi

The Sindh government has approved the purchase and deployment of 500 new electric buses under a public-private partnership model aimed at improving public transport infrastructure across the province.

The decision was announced in the Sindh Assembly, where senior minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that the new electric buses will be introduced on multiple routes, including Karachi and other urban centres. He said the initiative is part of a broader plan to modernise the provincial transport system and provide affordable and environment-friendly travel options to citizens.

According to the minister, the new bus network will cover underserved areas of Karachi such as Orangi Town, Banaras and surrounding localities, where public transport availability has long been a major concern. He added that several new routes are also being launched across Sindh, including in cities like Tando Allahyar, Khairpur and Rohri.

Sharjeel Memon said that the government is actively working to expand the province-wide transport network, and three additional routes are currently being developed. He further noted that the initiative is intended to reduce commuting difficulties faced by residents, particularly in densely populated urban and semi-urban areas.

During the assembly session, lawmakers also highlighted transport-related issues in their constituencies. An MQM-Pakistan member pointed out the lack of public transport in several areas of Karachi, including Manghopir, urging the government to take immediate action.

In response, the provincial government reiterated its commitment to addressing public concerns and improving accessibility to transport services. Officials said the introduction of electric buses would also help reduce air pollution and fuel dependency in major cities.
