Starmer faces pressure after Labour election setback

Published on: May 15, 2026 10:45 AM

Keir Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting political pressure after poor local election results triggered fresh uncertainty within the ruling Labour Party and intensified speculation over his leadership future.

Labour’s disappointing performance in recent local elections has sparked internal criticism, less than two years after Starmer led the party to a strong national victory on promises of stability and political renewal.

The pressure on Starmer increased after Health Minister Wes Streeting resigned, becoming the first senior cabinet member to publicly step down amid growing concerns about the party’s direction.

In his resignation letter, Streeting criticised Starmer’s leadership, arguing that Labour was suffering from a lack of clear vision and direction. He said the party needed a wider debate about its future and leadership options ahead of the next general election.

Two years after a landslide win, UK PM Keir Starmer faces growing pressure to resign. His approval stands at 70% negative vs 19% positive, as Labour voters cite unmet promises on living costs and public services.

Although Streeting did not formally trigger a leadership contest, his resignation has fuelled speculation about potential challengers.

Among those being discussed as possible contenders are Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, former deputy leader Angela Rayner and Armed Forces Minister Al Carns.

Burnham has signalled interest in returning to parliament after a Labour lawmaker in Greater Manchester announced plans to resign, potentially opening a path for him to contest a parliamentary seat.

Angela Rayner, who was recently cleared of deliberate wrongdoing in a tax-related inquiry, has also been mentioned as a possible leadership candidate, though she has not confirmed any plans.

Despite growing tensions, Starmer has indicated he intends to remain in office and contest any formal leadership challenge.

In response to Streeting’s resignation, Starmer expressed regret over his departure and called on party members to remain focused on national priorities.

He quickly appointed ally James Murray as the new health minister in an effort to project stability.

Some cabinet ministers, including Education Minister Bridget Phillipson, have publicly backed Starmer, urging Labour to move past the internal turmoil.

The political uncertainty has unsettled markets, with the British pound weakening slightly amid concerns over another leadership struggle.

Business leaders have warned that continued instability could undermine investor confidence at a time when Britain’s economy is showing early signs of recovery.
