FO rejects reports on China call

Published on: May 14, 2026 5:55 PM

Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Thursday rejected media reports about Chinese remarks regarding the Iran crisis mediation efforts. Officials said some reports misrepresented Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s conversation with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. The clarification matters as Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement to reduce regional tensions involving Iran and the United States.

Addressing a weekly briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said the call reflected traditional warmth and cordiality. He stated that certain reports wrongly suggested China asked Pakistan to “do more” regarding mediation efforts. Andrabi clarified that Wang appreciated Pakistan’s constructive diplomatic role and fully supported its peace efforts.

According to the Foreign Office, the Chinese foreign minister praised Pakistan for facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. Wang also acknowledged Islamabad’s role in helping extend the temporary ceasefire during the ongoing regional tensions. He expressed hope that Pakistan would continue contributing toward restoring peace and regional stability.

Meanwhile, both diplomats stressed the importance of maintaining a durable ceasefire and ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The Foreign Office said China reaffirmed support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts during the high-level diplomatic contact. Beijing also pledged to continue contributing toward efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.

Pakistan has remained actively engaged in diplomacy despite stalled negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Earlier this week, Ishaq Dar held separate discussions with US, Saudi, and United Nations officials regarding the crisis. Diplomatic efforts have continued as regional and international stakeholders seek to prevent renewed hostilities in the Middle East.
