Iranian Football Chief Announces World Cup Participation Plans

Published on: May 10, 2026 6:08 AM

FIFA World Cup 2026

Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj confirmed that Iran will participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026 next month. He said no power in the world could stop Iran from playing in the tournament. Moreover, he stressed that the team qualified through merit and performance.

In an interview with a news agency, Mehdi Taj said Iran would take part in the event without compromising its beliefs, culture, or traditions. He emphasized that the country expects respect for its national identity during the tournament. Furthermore, he said Iran wants equal treatment for its players and officials.

The Iranian football chief also outlined several conditions for participation in the World Cup. He demanded a secure environment for the Iranian team and officials throughout the tournament. In addition, he said authorities must avoid any discrimination in issuing visas to Iranian players and delegation members.

Taj further stated that Iran’s national flag must receive proper respect during the event. He specifically asked the US government to provide special security for Iranian players and officials at hotels, airports, and stadiums. Moreover, he said only Iran’s officially recognized national flag should be allowed inside stadiums.

He also requested that Iran’s national anthem be played correctly and without interruption before matches. According to him, reporters should only ask football-related questions during media interactions. Therefore, Iran expects sporting matters to remain separate from political disputes during the tournament.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Meanwhile, Iran is scheduled to play its opening match against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles. In the end, Iran confirmed its World Cup participation while stressing respect for its culture, identity, and national symbols.
