Rubio says Iran response needed today

Published on: May 8, 2026 6:22 PM

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington expects Iran to respond today to its proposals in ongoing diplomatic talks. He said progress in negotiations depends on Tehran’s prompt reply. Rubio stressed that the United States wants to move forward with serious discussions on the nuclear issue.

Rubio said Iran has not yet formally responded to the US proposals. However, he expressed hope that a reply would arrive within the day. He reiterated that the US position remains firm against Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. According to him, global powers share the goal of preventing nuclear escalation in the region.

He also claimed that US naval forces have intercepted multiple oil tankers linked to Iran. Rubio said Iran seeks control over the Strait of Hormuz, but international sea routes cannot be dominated by any single country. These remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region.

The US secretary of state clarified that recent strikes in the region were not part of a specific named operation. He warned that any missile attacks on US forces would be met with a strong response. His comments reflect rising military and diplomatic pressure between Washington and Tehran.

Rubio also addressed wider global issues, including Lebanon, Ukraine, China, and Taiwan. He said the US remains focused on diplomatic solutions but will not engage in prolonged talks without progress. According to him, Washington is ready to mediate conflicts but expects concrete outcomes from negotiations.
