Russia blocks US-backed Iran resolution

Published on: May 8, 2026 9:00 PM

Russia has strongly rejected a US-sponsored draft resolution against Iran at the United Nations Security Council, calling it biased and escalatory. The Russian envoy said Moscow would not support any measure that singles out Iran while ignoring broader regional causes of instability. The remarks came during a session on maritime security in the Gulf region.

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said the proposed resolution attempted to impose a one-sided narrative. He stressed that any sustainable solution must address the root causes of the ongoing regional tensions. He also warned that passing such resolutions could further inflame instability in the Middle East.

The Russian envoy said maritime security in the Gulf cannot be achieved through condemnation alone. He argued that lasting peace requires ending military actions and resolving ongoing conflicts in the region. According to him, addressing only one party would deepen divisions rather than reduce tensions.

Russia urged all Security Council members to avoid introducing confrontational measures. It said the focus should be on de-escalation and dialogue instead of punitive actions. Moscow also cautioned that politically motivated resolutions risk worsening already fragile regional security.

The United States had reportedly proposed the resolution with support from several Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar. The draft called on Iran to halt attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and dismantle certain operational controls. The proposal has intensified diplomatic divisions within the Security Council.
