US warns Iran over Hormuz Strait

Published on: May 5, 2026 6:43 PM

The United States has warned Iran over alleged maritime actions in the Strait of Hormuz. The US said it will not allow Iran to control or tax the global shipping route. The statement came amid rising tensions in the strategic waterway. The developments affect international trade and regional security.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Iranian ports are under close surveillance. He claimed Iranian vessels attempted to disrupt shipping in the region. He said US naval forces forced several ships to turn back. He stressed that the mission is defensive and temporary in nature.

Hegseth said the operation aims to secure global commercial shipping. He added that the US does not intend to escalate conflict in the region. However, he warned that any Iranian attack would face a strong response. He described the Strait of Hormuz as an international passage.

General Dan Caine said Iran has targeted commercial ships multiple times. He alleged that Iranian forces have used drones and small boats. He said two ships were seized during recent incidents. He confirmed that US and allied forces are responding to these threats.

US officials said around 15,000 personnel are involved in the operation. They urged the international community to support stability in the region. They accused Iran of conducting covert maritime operations below war thresholds. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key global energy route.
