Babar Azam form boost lifts hopes for Pakistan Test campaign

Published on: April 29, 2026 3:35 PM

Sarfaraz Ahmed, Pakistan’s red-ball head coach, described the return to form of Babar Azam as a highly encouraging sign for Pakistan cricket during the ongoing Pakistan Super League season. Speaking during the national team’s preparation camp, Sarfaraz said strong performances from key players before an important international tour can significantly boost confidence within the squad. He added that Babar’s improved form has lifted optimism among players and coaching staff ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming Test commitments.

While addressing the media at the training camp in Karachi, Sarfaraz explained that the squad has been following a structured schedule designed to improve fitness and match readiness before travelling abroad. Players are currently participating in two daily sessions, beginning with intensive net practice during the morning hours followed by fielding drills and conditioning exercises later in the evening. The coaching staff believes this routine will help players adjust quickly to demanding match situations during the upcoming Test series.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz confirmed that players participating in the Pakistan Super League final will join the national squad in Bangladesh on May 4 once their franchise commitments conclude. This arrangement allows the coaching staff to maintain squad balance while also respecting players’ obligations in the domestic T20 tournament. He noted that the team management expects the full squad to assemble shortly before the start of the series, ensuring enough time for final preparations.

Sarfaraz also shared insights about his coaching responsibilities, explaining that he has been working within the coaching structure for the past seven to eight months with a clear focus on red-ball cricket. According to him, decisions related to white-ball formats fall under the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Therefore, his primary responsibility remains building a competitive Test side capable of delivering consistent performances in the longest format of the game.

In addition, the head coach confirmed that promising domestic performers Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal have been included in the squad to reward their performances in domestic competitions. Sarfaraz said opportunities for emerging players remain essential for strengthening the national pool and maintaining healthy competition within the team. By integrating young talent alongside experienced players, the management hopes to build a balanced squad capable of competing in challenging overseas conditions.

Looking ahead, Sarfaraz emphasised that the training camp in Karachi was organised specifically to prepare players for conditions they may encounter during the Bangladesh tour. He added that Pakistan aims to begin the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship with strong performances and renewed momentum. With senior players regaining form and fresh talent entering the squad, the coaching staff believes the team can start the campaign on a positive and confident note.
