Michael Jackson biopic may expand with new sequel plans

Published on: April 28, 2026 5:57 PM

The biographical film Michael about legendary pop icon Michael Jackson may not end with a single movie, as producers are already discussing plans for at least one sequel. The project has generated strong interest from audiences and early box office success, encouraging filmmakers to consider expanding the story into a larger cinematic series.

Executives at Lionsgate have hinted that Jackson’s life and career may require more than one film to fully portray his personal and professional journey. Company leader Adam Fogelson suggested that the biography contains many chapters that could be explored in future installments.

The first film has already attracted attention because it does not focus heavily on the child abuse allegations that surrounded the singer during parts of his life. Some individuals involved in the production believe those controversial aspects could be explored more directly in a possible follow-up project.

Director Antoine Fuqua originally filmed several scenes related to those events, including a depiction of a police raid at Jackson’s Neverland property. However, legal complications connected to an accuser’s previous agreement reportedly forced the removal of those sequences from the final version of the film.

The decision resulted in costly reshoots and significant editing changes, though filmmakers say much of the unused footage could still appear in a future sequel. Fuqua noted that a large amount of material has already been filmed and could naturally continue the narrative in another production.

Despite mixed reactions from critics before release, the film has performed strongly among audiences and generated impressive early ticket sales. Industry analysts believe this positive commercial response could increase the likelihood of additional films that explore different phases of Michael Jackson’s complex life and career.
