The government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has extended a ban on Pakistan-listed prohibited political parties from participating in its electoral process through a new presidential ordinance.

Issued in Muzaffarabad, the amendment to the election law ensures that any political party banned in Pakistan, along with its affiliated or subsidiary organisations, will be ineligible to contest elections in AJK. The move also bars political wings or branches linked to such groups from taking part in the electoral process.
Officials described the ordinance as a significant step toward aligning AJK’s electoral framework with national regulations. The changes are aimed at strengthening oversight and maintaining consistency in the political system across jurisdictions.
In addition to restrictions on banned parties, the ordinance introduces new provisions concerning voting rights for the 1989 migrant community. Registered refugees residing in camps who relocate will now be able to cast their votes from their new place of residence, a move intended to improve voter accessibility and participation.
Authorities confirmed that the ordinance has been promulgated by the AJK president and takes immediate effect, marking a key update in the region’s electoral laws.
Separately, political developments are underway regarding the presidency of AJK. The Pakistan Peoples Party has reportedly decided to field its own candidate for the post, which is currently vacant following the death of former president Barrister Sultan Mahmood earlier this year.

At present, the Speaker of the AJK Legislative Assembly is serving as acting president until a permanent appointment is made. Observers say the latest legal changes and upcoming presidential election are likely to influence the political landscape in AJK in the coming weeks.
