Fired Navy secretary John Phelan challenges dismissal, seeks Trump’s final word

Navy Secretary's dismissal reinforces message that nobody is safe in the Trump administration | U.S. | EL PAÍS English

A dramatic standoff has emerged in Washington after John Phelan reportedly refused to step down immediately following his dismissal by Pete Hegseth, instead seeking direct confirmation from Donald Trump.

The abrupt removal of Phelan, announced by the Pentagon with immediate effect, caught many officials off guard. No official reason was initially provided, but reports suggest tensions had been building for months between the two senior figures. Following the announcement, Phelan went to the White House to clarify whether the decision had Trump’s direct backing, indicating uncertainty over the chain of command behind the move.

According to reports, Hegseth had grown frustrated with what he viewed as slow progress on critical naval shipbuilding reforms — a key priority for the administration. The issue reportedly came to a head during a recent White House meeting where Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of developments, prompting Hegseth to take swift action.

Another point of contention was Phelan’s direct communication with Trump, which allegedly bypassed Hegseth and strained their working relationship. Their proximity outside official duties — including living near Trump’s residence in Florida — is also believed to have added to internal tensions.

Despite being told his removal was effective immediately, Phelan’s decision to seek personal confirmation from the president underscores the unusual nature of the situation. Reports indicate he left the White House without a clear reversal of the decision.

In the interim, Navy Undersecretary Hung Cao has been appointed acting secretary while the administration determines a permanent replacement.
