Tehran Assures No Toll for Friendly Tankers in Strait of Hormuz

Published on: April 25, 2026 4:46 AM

no tax on friendly tankers

Iran assures no tax on friendly tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Russian sources. This move aims to ease concerns among allied nations using the key shipping route. It also reflects efforts to maintain smooth maritime trade despite regional tensions.

Russian officials said Iran confirmed that it will not charge toll taxes on tankers from friendly countries. These assurances come after earlier announcements about collecting fees from vessels crossing the strategic waterway. Therefore, the policy now appears more selective and targeted.

Previously, Iran had declared that toll taxes collected from ships would be deposited in the central bank. Officials confirmed that initial revenue from these tolls had already been transferred. This step indicated a structured approach to managing maritime charges.

Moreover, Iranian parliamentary officials supported the policy and highlighted its economic importance. They said such measures could help regulate shipping activity and generate state revenue. However, the exemption for friendly nations shows a flexible diplomatic stance.

Overall, Iran assures no tax on friendly tankers in the Strait as part of a broader strategy. This approach balances economic interests with diplomatic relations. It also signals an attempt to avoid conflict while maintaining influence over a vital global trade route.
