
An internal Pentagon email has outlined possible measures against NATO allies accused of not supporting US operations in the Iran war. The options reportedly include suspending Spain from alliance roles and reassessing US diplomatic positions. The proposals reflect growing tensions within the Western alliance.
The email, cited by a US official, expresses frustration over limited allied support for American operations. It highlights concerns about access, basing, and overflight rights during the conflict. Officials described such cooperation as a basic requirement for NATO functioning.

One option discussed is suspending “difficult” members from key NATO positions. Spain has drawn particular attention due to its refusal to allow its bases or airspace for offensive operations against Iran. The United States maintains major military facilities in Spain.
President Donald Trump has criticised NATO allies for not supporting efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz. He has also questioned the reliability of the alliance and suggested possible US withdrawal. Pentagon officials say NATO must not function as a one-sided arrangement.

European allies argue that joining the US naval blockade would risk escalating the conflict. Meanwhile, officials in Washington say the war has exposed divisions within NATO. The internal discussions have not yet produced any formal policy decisions.
