Severe heatwave warning issued across Pakistan until May 5

Published on: April 23, 2026 6:06 PM

The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a nationwide alert warning that a severe heatwave will affect large parts of the country, including Karachi, until May 5. Authorities have urged citizens and institutions to take immediate precautionary steps as extreme temperatures continue to rise across multiple regions.

According to the alert, southern regions such as Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan will experience the most severe heat conditions. Major cities including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Turbat are expected to remain under prolonged high temperatures.

At the same time, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast that between April 24 and April 29, some regions may receive rain, dust storms, and strong winds. These changing conditions may temporarily affect parts of northern and central areas, including Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and several nearby districts.

Meanwhile, northern regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and areas in Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to experience intermittent rainfall and thunderstorms during the same period. Additionally, Azad Jammu and Kashmir may also see unstable weather conditions with rain and gusty winds.

Furthermore, the NDMA has warned that prolonged heat exposure may increase risks of heatstroke, dehydration, and other health complications. Therefore, citizens have been advised to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, increase water intake, and follow safety guidelines issued by authorities.

Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a high-level inquiry into the non-functional early warning system in Gilgit-Baltistan and directed institutions to improve monsoon preparedness. He stressed urgent coordination, stronger monitoring systems, and preventive planning to reduce risks ahead of the upcoming rainy season.
