Iran reopens airspace, flight operations resume gradually

Published on: April 18, 2026 3:31 PM

Iran has announced the gradual reopening of its airspace, marking a cautious return to normal flight operations after recent disruptions. The country’s civil aviation authority confirmed that flight activity began resuming from 7:00 AM local time on Saturday across selected airports.

According to officials, international flights have already restarted on eastern air corridors, allowing global air traffic to once again pass through Iranian airspace. The move is expected to ease pressure on regional aviation routes that had been affected by the earlier suspension.

Authorities stated that the reopening will be carried out in phases, depending on technical readiness and coordination between military and civilian aviation sectors. Airports across the country will gradually restore operations as conditions stabilize, with priority given to safety and operational preparedness.

The disruption of Iran’s airspace had impacted both regional and international airlines, forcing many carriers to reroute flights and increasing travel times. The restoration of these routes is likely to improve connectivity and reduce congestion in neighboring air corridors.

Officials emphasized that passenger services will also return to normal gradually, with airlines and airport authorities working together to ensure smooth handling of travelers. Enhanced safety protocols and operational checks remain in place during the transition period.

The reopening is being seen as a positive step toward stabilizing regional transport systems, particularly amid broader geopolitical tensions that have affected both air and sea routes in recent weeks.

Aviation experts note that Iran’s strategic location makes its airspace a key transit route between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Its reopening is expected to bring relief to airlines and passengers alike by shortening flight paths and lowering operational costs.

Authorities reiterated that while operations are resuming, all measures are being taken to ensure safety remains the top priority as the country moves toward full restoration of its aviation network.
