Islamabad United dominate Rawalpindiz in first Twin Cities PSL clash

Published on: April 5, 2026 11:31 AM

Islamabad United delivered a commanding performance to beat Rawalpindiz by seven wickets in the inaugural “Twin Cities” Pakistan Super League (PSL) clash at Gaddafi Stadium, chasing a target of 157 with 34 balls to spare. The victory highlighted United’s balanced squad and aggressive approach, leaving Rawalpindiz struggling in their maiden PSL season.

Rawalpindiz posted 156 for 7 in their 20 overs, with Kamran Ghulam top-scoring with 50 off 37 deliveries. Despite his steady innings, frequent dismissals prevented the hosts from posting a competitive total, allowing Islamabad to gain an early advantage.

Opting to field first, captain Shadab Khan saw early success as Richard Gleeson and Salman Irshad struck key wickets in the powerplay, restricting Rawalpindiz to 35 for 2 in six overs. Faheem Ashraf also contributed, preventing the opposition from building momentum beyond Ghulam’s innings.

Islamabad United’s chase was anchored by young opener Sameer Minhas, who scored 70 off 36 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. His innings earned him Player of the Match honors and set a confident tone for an authoritative run chase.

United raced to 62 for 1 in the powerplay, and despite Devon Conway’s dismissal for a modest score, contributions from Haider Ali (26 not out) and Mark Chapman (24 not out) sealed the victory efficiently. The chase reflected calculated aggression and strong middle-order support.

Rawalpindiz now face mounting pressure after a third consecutive loss, remaining at the bottom of the PSL standings. In contrast, Islamabad United aim to build momentum on this comprehensive win as the season progresses, strengthening their championship ambitions.
