‘Unrealistic move’: Macron rejects Hormuz force plan

Published on: April 2, 2026 10:50 PM

Emmanuel Macron said it is unrealistic to reopen the Strait of Hormuz through military force. He rejected calls for armed intervention following pressure from Donald Trump. The statement highlights rising global tensions affecting energy security and international shipping routes.

Macron made the remarks during a visit to South Korea while addressing reporters. He said some allies support using force to reopen the strategic waterway. However, he stressed that France has never supported such an approach due to serious risks.

He warned that any military operation would take a long time to succeed. Additionally, it would expose ships to threats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and missile attacks. Therefore, he emphasised the need for diplomatic solutions over military escalation.

Meanwhile, Trump has suggested reopening the strait as part of efforts to end the conflict. He indicated that talks with Iran’s new leadership could be possible. However, Iranian officials rejected these proposals and described US demands as unrealistic.

The conflict has increased global oil prices and disrupted regional stability. The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital route for nearly one-fifth of global oil shipments. Consequently, continued tensions risk further economic uncertainty and security challenges worldwide.
