Karachi roads remain closed after deadly protest outside US consulate

Published on: March 5, 2026 10:20 AM

Several major roads in Karachi have remained closed for the fourth consecutive day as authorities continue heightened security measures following a deadly protest outside the US Consulate earlier this week.

Traffic police confirmed that key routes around the diplomatic area have been blocked since Sunday after violent demonstrations erupted in response to the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The protest turned deadly, leaving at least 11 people dead and several others injured.

According to traffic officials, MT Khan Road has been closed using barriers and containers to prevent movement. Containers have also been placed on PIDC Bridge and nearby roads, restricting access to surrounding areas. Authorities have further blocked roads leading to Jinnah Bridge and Mai Kolachi Road as part of the ongoing security arrangements.

Jinnah Bridge itself has also been sealed with barriers, while the route from Boat Basin to Mai Kolachi Road has been closed to traffic. Officials said the restrictions were imposed to prevent further unrest and to secure the vicinity of the diplomatic mission.

Despite the closures, residents living within the affected zones are being allowed entry and exit after presenting valid identity documents at security checkpoints.

The protests began after news spread about the killing of Khamenei, sparking demonstrations in several countries, including Pakistan. In Karachi, demonstrators gathered outside the US Consulate carrying black flags and chanting anti-American and anti-Israel slogans.

During the protest, a group of demonstrators reportedly breached the outer wall of the consulate compound and caused property damage. The situation escalated into violence, resulting in multiple casualties.

Earlier reports cited by international media suggested that US Marines stationed at the consulate opened fire when protesters attempted to storm the premises. However, officials said it remains unclear whether those shots caused the fatalities or whether other security personnel, including local police or private guards, also fired weapons during the confrontation.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
