Ali Anwar

Pak Army and Enemy Instruments

Pakistan is currently going through a period that is highly sensitive, complex, and multidimensional in nature. On one hand, there are border tensions; on the other, threats of terrorism. In addition, there is economic pressure and, alongside it, a narrative war being waged through digital media. All these factors have the potential to affect national stability.

In recent days, certain individuals have made statements about the Pakistan Army that were not only harsh in tone but, according to some circles, also contrary to ground realities. These statements were prominently circulated on social media, YouTube channels, and other digital platforms. The purpose of this article is not to give an emotional reaction but to examine the issue in light of facts, national interest, and democratic principles. Immediately after the creation of Pakistan, the country faced numerous threats, the greatest of which was border security. From the wars of 1948, 1965, and 1971 to the Kargil front, the Pakistan Armed Forces played an active role in defending the country. The details of these battles are part of history, but the essential reality is that a country with limited resources consistently improved its defence capability and safeguarded its sovereignty. The war against terrorism is a significant chapter in Pakistan’s history. After 2001, changing regional circumstances directly affected Pakistan. Waves of terrorism in tribal areas and urban centres claimed thousands of lives. In response, the Pakistan Army and law enforcement agencies weakened the infrastructure of terrorism through various operations. Thousands of officers and soldiers sacrificed their lives. These sacrifices are not merely statistics; behind every martyr lies a family, a dream, and a story. When an institution makes sacrifices of such magnitude, discussions about it demand caution, seriousness, and respect.

Pakistan is a country frequently affected by natural disasters. The devastating earthquake of 2005, the catastrophic floods of 2010 and subsequent years, and the extreme weather events in recent times are examples. On all these occasions, the Pakistan Army played a central role in rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts. Restoring roads in affected areas, constructing temporary bridges, setting up medical camps, and providing food and tents all require immediate response and organised systems. It has often been observed at the public level that soldiers are among the first to reach affected regions in times of crisis. For this reason, in the minds of ordinary citizens, the Army is often seen as an institution that provides support in emergencies. In the twenty-first century, warfare is no longer confined to the battlefield. Today, one major front is social media, which some experts describe as part of “hybrid warfare.” Campaigns run on YouTube channels, Facebook pages, X (formerly Twitter), and other platforms can influence public opinion. Some individuals use extremely harsh language against the Pakistan Army. In a democratic society, every citizen has the right to criticism, but there is a difference between criticism and ridicule. If criticism is based on reason, evidence, and the intention to reform, it is considered positive. However, if the purpose is merely to weaken an institution’s image, incite unrest, or reinforce external narratives, it can be harmful to national interests. It is also a fact that relations between Pakistan and India have long remained tense. In such circumstances, if a narrative aligns with the official or unofficial media of an adversarial country, questions naturally arise. Pakistan’s history shows that when the nation has been united, it has overcome the greatest challenges; when internal divisions have increased, difficulties have multiplied.

The role played by the Pakistan Army in defending the country, combating terrorism, and responding to natural disasters is noteworthy and deserves recognition.

Today, the country needs economic stability, political harmony, and social unity. The military, judiciary, legislature, and executive are all pillars of the state. If a continuous campaign is run to weaken any one pillar, the entire structure can be affected. Therefore, it is essential that the process of criticism and accountability remains within constitutional and legal boundaries, rather than being left to the unregulated and irresponsible environment of social media. In a democratic society, suppressing dissent is not a solution. Open debate and transparent dialogue strengthen any system. However, such dialogue must be marked by civility, decency, and reason. If someone objects to the policies of the Pakistan Army or any other institution, they should present their views through constitutional and legal means. Parliament, courts, and independent media exist for this purpose. Abusive language, personal attacks, and inflammatory statements only create divisions within society. It should also be remembered that not everything that goes viral on social media is true. At times, information is presented out of context, leading to misunderstandings. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every citizen not to accept any statement or news without proper verification. Pakistan is a nuclear power and holds significant geopolitical importance in the region. Maintaining balanced relations with China, the United States, Russia, the Middle East, and Central Asia is a complex diplomatic challenge. In such circumstances, external forces may attempt to exert influence through various means. If internally we are weak, if there is mistrust among institutions, and if the public is divided, external pressure becomes more effective. National unity, therefore, is not merely a slogan but a practical necessity. The role played by the Pakistan Army in defending borders, counterterrorism, peace missions, and internal security deserves acknowledgement.

The media is often called the fourth pillar of the state. Its role is to raise questions, conduct investigations, and keep the public informed. However, media freedom comes with responsibility. Sensationalism, the race for ratings, and the publication of unverified news can create anxiety in society. On platforms like YouTube, some individuals use harsh language for personal gain or fame. Such content is viewed by millions, and at times, people believe it without proper verification. Therefore, viewers must also be conscious and evaluate every statement critically.

At this time, Pakistan needs thoughtful and wise reflection more than emotional slogans. The role played by the Pakistan Army in defending the country, combating terrorism, and responding to natural disasters is noteworthy and deserves recognition. Only a stable, united, and aware nation can both strengthen its defence institutions and nurture democratic values. This is the path that guarantees Pakistan’s security, progress, and prosperity.
