Keir Starmer strengthens NATO commitment at Munich

Published on: February 14, 2026 6:45 PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the UK will deploy warships to patrol the Arctic, responding to US President Donald Trump’s prior threats to annex Greenland. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Starmer said Britain would coordinate with the US, Canada, and other NATO allies to bolster High North security. He emphasized that the move demonstrates the UK’s commitment to safeguarding allied territories and regional stability.

Starmer also highlighted plans for “deeper economic integration” with the European Union, aiming to move closer to the single market in several sectors. He said the current EU-UK status quo is “not fit for purpose” but acknowledged the plan would involve trade-offs. The Prime Minister stressed that economic cooperation complements the UK’s broader security and diplomatic objectives.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s dedication to NATO and Article 5, pledging that an attack on one ally is an attack on all. Starmer referenced past operations in Afghanistan and underscored that the UK has consistently supported allies under the alliance’s founding principles. “Be in no doubt, if called on, the UK would come to your aid today,” he said.

Starmer’s address followed a speech by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reassured European partners about transatlantic unity. Rubio criticized past Western missteps over the last four decades while seeking to mend US-Europe relations amid recent transatlantic tensions. His speech, however, omitted a planned Ukraine meeting, raising questions about US engagement in European security issues.

The Munich Security Conference brought together global leaders to discuss major security challenges, including NATO commitments, Arctic strategy, and economic integration. Starmer’s remarks highlighted the UK’s determination to secure the Arctic, deepen EU ties, and maintain NATO solidarity, signaling a strong and proactive approach to global security.
