Microsoft reportedly developing Xbox controller with built-in Wi-Fi

Microsoft reportedly developing Xbox controller with built-in Wi-Fi

Microsoft is reportedly working on a new generation of Xbox controllers featuring built-in Wi-Fi, aimed at enhancing the cloud gaming experience for players. While the company has not officially confirmed the device, leaked reports suggest the Wi-Fi-enabled controller could launch in 2026.

The key innovation of the new controller would be its ability to connect directly to the internet, bypassing the traditional route through a phone, PC, or TV app. This change is expected to reduce input latency, a common frustration among Xbox Cloud Gaming users, by eliminating intermediary steps between the controller and the cloud session.

Currently, standard Xbox controllers connect to consoles or PCs via Bluetooth or USB, which then relay signals to cloud servers. By integrating Wi-Fi directly into the controller, Microsoft aims to make cloud gaming more responsive and closer to the performance of local gameplay.

The development aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to position Xbox as a service-first platform, with cloud gaming at its core. Analysts say a dedicated Wi-Fi controller could make cloud gaming more appealing without the need for players to purchase a new console, addressing one of the primary challenges of remote gaming.

However, many details remain unclear. It is not yet known whether the Wi-Fi controller will function exclusively with cloud gaming, work with existing consoles and PCs, or launch as a separate accessory. Microsoft has also not disclosed how pairing would work without a local device or whether the Wi-Fi controller would replace current models.

Until official confirmation, players are advised to continue using standard Xbox controllers for cloud gaming. Nonetheless, the prospect of a controller with built-in Wi-Fi has sparked excitement among gamers eager for lower latency and a more seamless online gaming experience.
