The city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) declined to 177, however, air quality remained firmly in the unhealthy category. Despite the improvement, pollution levels continued to pose serious health risks, as the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was recorded at an alarming 18.7 times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended annual guideline value. Cloudy conditions prevailed in the city on Tuesday, and the Meteorological Department forecast similar weather over the next 24 hours, with a possibility of scattered rainfall. According to MET officials, continental air was dominating most regions of the country, while a shallow westerly wave was influencing the extreme northern areas. As a result, mainly cold and dry weather is expected across much of the country, whereas hilly regions are likely to experience very cold and partly cloudy conditions. On Tuesday, the lowest temperature was recorded in Leh, where the mercury fell to -08°C, while Lahore reported a minimum temperature of 12°C.
