Police officer martyred in Nowshera raid linked to Islamabad blast

31 martyred in Islamabad Imambargah suicide attack during Friday prayers

PESHAWAR — A police officer was martyred and a constable injured during a raid in Nowshera’s Hakeemabad area, officials confirmed, as authorities continue operations against those involved in the deadly Islamabad imambargah suicide bombing.

The late-night raid was conducted following leads on suspected facilitators of the Islamabad attack, in which at least 36 people were killed and scores injured during Friday prayers at the Imambargah Qasr-i-Khadijatul Kubra on the outskirts of the capital.

According to a senior police official, an exchange of fire broke out between law enforcement personnel and the militants during the operation. “Yes, a raid was conducted in the district and an exchange of fire took place. An assistant sub-inspector was martyred, and a constable sustained injuries in the crossfire,” the official said, requesting anonymity.

The operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, not just the Nowshera police, and formed part of the ongoing investigation into the Islamabad bombing, the official added, without disclosing further details.

The suicide attack in Islamabad was the deadliest in the capital in nearly two decades, surpassing earlier incidents including the 2008 Marriott Hotel blast that claimed 60 lives. It also comes less than three months after another suicide bombing outside Islamabad’s G-11 district and sessions court on November 11, 2025, which killed 12 people and injured more than 30.

Authorities have stepped up nationwide operations in the wake of the attack, aiming to dismantle the network behind the suicide bombing. Rescue and investigation teams are coordinating across provinces to track down the perpetrators and their facilitators, while security measures have been heightened in sensitive areas of the capital.

Officials have assured the public that the probe is ongoing and that every lead is being followed to ensure the safety of citizens and hold those responsible accountable.
