The new safeguards build on security features first introduced in 2024 and will be available on Android devices running Android 10 and newer. One of the most notable additions in Android 16 is improved handling of repeated failed login attempts. A new feature called Failed Authentication Lock automatically locks the screen after multiple incorrect PIN or password entries, making it harder for thieves to gain access through guesswork. Android 16 will also include dedicated settings that allow users to customise how this protection behaves.
Google is further expanding its Identity Check feature, extending it to cover more apps and services. This includes banking applications and Android’s built-in password manager, ensuring that sensitive actions remain protected behind stronger identity verification methods. By doing so, Google aims to prevent unauthorised access to critical accounts even if a device falls into the wrong hands.
For device recovery, Android continues to offer tools such as Remote Lock, which allows users to lock a lost or stolen phone through any web browser. This feature will be available on all devices running Android 10 or later. In Brazil, Google is taking an extra step by enabling Remote Lock and Theft Detection Lock by default on new Android devices.
