UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the Taliban to ensure that no terrorist outfit operates from Afghanistan into other countries, as he voiced deep concern over the de facto authorities’ support to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which targets Pakistan. “We are particularly concerned with what happened with the (TTP) and the support they might receive,” he said in response to a question from APP about intensified TTP attacks cross border attacks at his news conference marking the start of his 10th and final year in office. The UN, Guterres said, remains totally committed to four essential objectives in Afghanistan, including making sure that the Afghan institutions are really inclusive and that all ethnic groups are represented and all sectors of society are represented. “We consider that a basic condition for the consolidation of peace,” the UN chief said. He said it was absolutely essential to respect human rights, but essentially the rights of women and girls. “And we believe this is one of the areas where the failure of the Taliban to deliver in relation to what, I believe, the international community in a very justified way wants is unacceptable. And finally, the UN chief said, the need to control drug trafficking. In this regard, he recognized meaningful progress since the Taliban emerged in 2021. “But in relation to the three other aspects, we have a frustration, because we don’t see our legitimate concerns making the progress. That is essential.”
