ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government has decided not to increase the average basic electricity tariff, providing relief to consumers across the country.

The announcement was made by the Additional Secretary of Power during a review plea hearing at the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). The official explained that adjustments have been made to the subsidy, allowing the government to maintain the current tariff structure without additional increases.
Power Division officials highlighted that the country’s energy mix has changed since July, enabling the continuation of existing rates. Currently, electricity consumers across all categories benefit from Rs62.9 billion in subsidies.

Earlier, the Power Division had filed a review petition with NEPRA challenging its decision to raise the base electricity tariff. Officials also requested the application of a uniform tariff for state-run distribution companies as well as K-Electric, aiming to streamline the billing system across the country.
In a related development, NEPRA officially assigned responsibility for the massive nationwide blackout of January 8, 2021, to the National Grid Company and the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA). The outage had left Pakistan without electricity for nearly 20 hours, and both organizations were found to have failed in restoring power in a timely manner.
The decision not to increase electricity tariffs comes as a relief to households and businesses already coping with rising living costs. By maintaining the existing subsidy framework, the government aims to ensure affordability while addressing structural issues in the energy sector.
