Why royal libraries reject white gloves

Published on: January 6, 2026 7:45 PM

King Charles III’s Royal Library has unexpectedly become the focus of online debate after a behind-the-scenes video from Windsor Castle revealed surprising modern conservation practices.

The video showed library staff carefully opening John James Audubon’s famed Birds of America, a four-volume masterpiece known for its life-sized, hand-coloured illustrations and extraordinary rarity.

However, instead of admiring the artwork, viewers quickly noticed that curators handled the massive pages without gloves, sparking concern and heated discussion across social media comment sections.

In response, the Royal Collection Trust clarified that clean, dry hands are safer than gloves, as gloves reduce touch sensitivity and raise the risk of tearing fragile paper.

Experts widely agree that cotton gloves can snag delicate edges, while bare hands allow greater control, a standard practice followed by leading archives around the world.

Meanwhile, Windsor Castle itself continues to evolve under King Charles’ environmental vision, with eco-friendly upgrades, including newly installed solar panels, ensuring the historic site remains protected for future generations.
