Codex and Claude usage limits increased for Christmas holiday period

OpenAI and Anthropic have temporarily increased usage limits for their AI coding assistants, Codex and Claude, in a holiday-season move aimed at supporting developers and AI enthusiasts during the Christmas period.

According to announcements made on social media, OpenAI has doubled the usage limits for Codex compared to its usual capacity. The enhanced limits will remain in effect until January 1, 2026, allowing users additional flexibility to work on coding projects during the year-end break.

Anthropic has rolled out a similar holiday offer for its Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers. Under the promotion, users can take advantage of higher usage limits from December 25 to December 31 across mobile, desktop and web platforms. The temporary increase applies to both existing and new individual subscribers, while Team and Enterprise plans have been excluded from the offer.

OpenAI also introduced a festive twist by launching a holiday-themed version of Codex, dubbed “Santa Codex”. The special edition features a Christmas-inspired interface redesign, adding a seasonal touch to the coding assistant experience.

While the initiative has been welcomed by many developers, it has also highlighted broader concerns about usage caps and pricing models on popular AI platforms. Some users have pointed out that standard plans still impose restrictive limits. For instance, Claude Pro subscribers are reportedly capped at around 200 messages every eight hours, which many consider insufficient for intensive development work.

At the same time, higher-tier Max plans are viewed by some users as prohibitively expensive for everyday or independent developers. As a result, there have been growing calls for permanent mid-tier subscription options that offer a better balance between affordability and capacity.

Although the holiday promotions provide short-term relief, they have reignited discussion around infrastructure costs, pricing strategies and the need for more predictable and scalable access to AI tools. Developers say that while seasonal boosts are appreciated, long-term solutions will be key to sustaining productivity and innovation in the rapidly expanding AI ecosystem.
