Until now, Google allowed users with third-party email addresses linked to their Google accounts to update their sign-in email, but users with Gmail addresses were told that an “@gmail.com” address usually could not be changed. According to updated information published on Google’s support pages, this restriction is now being eased as part of a gradual rollout.

Under the new feature, users will be able to change their existing “@gmail.com” address to a new Gmail address with a modified username. Google says the email address used to sign in helps identify an account across its services, and the update is intended to give users more flexibility without disrupting their data or access.

Importantly, Google clarified that changing a Gmail address will not affect account data. Emails, photos, messages, and files stored in services such as Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos will remain intact. The original Gmail address will be converted into an alias, meaning users will continue to receive emails sent to both the old and new addresses in the same inbox.
Users will also be able to sign in to Google services, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Play, using either their old or new email address. None of the account’s credentials or settings will change as a result of the update.
However, Google has placed limits on how often the change can be made. Each account can modify its Gmail address up to three times, allowing for a total of four associated addresses. Additionally, after making a change, users will not be able to create a new Gmail account using the old address for 12 months, nor delete the newly chosen address during that period.

Google also noted that the old email address may still appear in some places, such as older calendar events, and that the original address will remain permanently assigned to the user and cannot be claimed by anyone else.
