QUETTA: The first-ever comprehensive online dictionary for the Balochi language, titled ‘Labzganj’, has been officially launched and is now accessible to the public. The digital dictionary was developed by the Balochi Academy Quetta under its Natural Language Processing (NLP) initiative, marking a significant milestone in modern Balochi lexicography.
‘Labzganj’ is the most extensive lexical resource for the Balochi language to date, containing more than 40,000 entries. Each word is provided with meanings and equivalents in Balochi, English, Urdu, and Brahvi, making it a valuable tool for students, researchers, linguists, translators, and language learners in Pakistan and across the global Baloch diaspora.

Habitan Umar, chairman of the Balochi Academy and coordinator of the NLP Balochi Project, highlighted the academic foundations of the initiative during the launch. He said that the project builds on previous works, including ‘Balochi Labzbalad’, compiled and edited by Jan Muhammad Dashti in 2015 and 2017.
The development of ‘Labzganj’ was also supported by Dr. Naseer Dashti, who contributed to the Balochi–English and English–Balochi dictionaries, and Panah Baloch, who compiled and edited the multilingual entries in Balochi, Urdu, Brahvi, and Sindhi. Umar emphasized that these scholarly contributions laid the groundwork for the standardisation and modernisation of Balochi lexicography.
Linguists and academics have widely welcomed the launch, describing it as a vital resource for preserving a language that has historically relied on oral transmission and scattered written records. The digital platform is expected to encourage learning, research, and cultural preservation, while also facilitating greater accessibility for the younger generation and the global Baloch community.
The Balochi Academy Quetta hopes that this initiative will not only modernise the study of Balochi but also serve as a model for digital language preservation projects in Pakistan.
