The Lower Court on Monday approved a further two-day physical remand of YouTuber Sohrab Barkat in a case linked to the alleged sharing of anti-state content on social media. Judicial Magistrate Malik Imran heard the matter after the completion of Barkat’s earlier five-day physical remand. Officials of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) produced the accused before the court and requested an additional 25-day physical remand to continue the investigation. Barkat was represented by Barrister Saad Rasool, who told the court that his client had been invited to attend an international conference. He said the defence later learned that Barkat’s name had been placed on the PNIL list. The counsel added that the Islamabad High Court was approached, where six hearings took place. During those proceedings, NCCIA and other agencies stated that Barkat was not wanted in any case. The defence said that on November 26, Barkat was stopped at Islamabad airport and informed that he would be arrested. NCCIA officials later claimed their system was not updated. The lawyer further stated that Barkat was produced before a court in Lahore after 48 hours, instead of Islamabad. After being sent to jail in another case in Lahore, he was re-arrested by NCCIA.
