RAWALPINDI – A Guard of Honour ceremony was held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) on Monday in recognition of Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s first-ever Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). Troops from the army, navy, and air force took part in the ceremony, marking a historic moment in the country’s military structure.

Field Marshal Asim Munir, a recipient of the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) and Hilal-e-Jurat, inspected the Guard of Honour and received a formal salute. Senior military leaders, including Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, were present at the event.

The ceremony also commemorated what officials described as the successful outcome of the Marka-e-Haq, during which Pakistan reportedly defeated India in a multi-domain operation. Under the leadership of Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, the Pakistan Air Force was credited with downing seven enemy aircraft, including four Rafale jets and an S-400 system.

The Pakistan Navy, led by Admiral Naveed Ashraf, was acknowledged for effectively securing Pakistan’s maritime borders and preventing attempted intrusions by the Indian Navy. The event highlighted the coordinated performance of all three services during the operation.

Earlier this month, the federal government appointed Asim Munir as Pakistan’s first CDF, a move approved by President Asif Ali Zardari following a summary from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Ministry of Defence issued the notification soon after presidential approval.

The appointment was made under Article 243 of the Constitution and Clause 8A of the Army Act, following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which created the new CDF position to enhance tri-services coordination. According to the notification, Field Marshal Munir will hold dual offices as both Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces for a five-year tenure.
