India’s ODI toss curse continues with 20 straight losses

Published on: December 4, 2025 11:00 PM

The Indian cricket team has set an unwanted record by losing 20 consecutive ODI tosses. The streak began in the 2023 World Cup final. India aims to break the pattern in the third ODI against South Africa on December 6.

Acting captain KL Rahul admitted he is shocked by the rare streak. He said practice has not helped, and the losing streak puts extra pressure on the team. Three Indian captains—Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Rahul—have all failed to win a toss since November 2023.

In the second ODI in Raipur, India lost the toss again to South Africa’s Temba Bavuma. Rahul said he is most concerned about the streak because the team has not won a toss for a long time. Experts say predicting a toss is nearly impossible.

Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar noted that toss outcomes depend on the opposing captain’s choices. Former South African bowler Dale Steyn said long streaks have happened before, and sometimes teams even let another player toss. Even then, Temba Bavuma won the toss for South Africa.

India’s losing streak in tosses is statistically improbable, with chances less than one in a million. Fans will watch closely on December 6 in Visakhapatnam to see if the team finally breaks the unlucky sequence.
