IMF Reforms Can Boost Pakistan’s Growth

IMF Reforms Can Boost Pakistan’s Growth

The new IMF reforms report has created strong debate across Pakistan. Many critics wrongly treat the document as a judgment on the current government. However, the IMF prepared the report at Pakistan’s request and with full cooperation. It reviews decades-old governance issues that limit growth. It aims to guide future reforms and support programme monitoring.

The report studies five key areas that shape Pakistan’s economic performance. These include fiscal governance, market rules, financial oversight, anti-money laundering systems, and the rule of law. The IMF highlights tariff policy as a major weakness that hurts exports. It adds that improved tariff management can boost growth over five years. It stresses that past protectionist policies slowed economic activity.

The IMF notes that Pakistan has already taken positive steps toward better tariff policy. It praises the shift of tariff powers to the National Tariff Commission. This change created a more stable and transparent structure. It also welcomes the National Tariff Policy 2025–2030. The new plan sets clear goals for tariff cuts and trade liberalisation. It can improve productivity, investment, and competitiveness.

However, the IMF reforms report warns that progress depends on strong institutions. It says the National Tariff Commission lacks staff and technical expertise. These gaps leave tariff decisions open to pressure and sudden changes. The government has started reviewing the commission’s performance. It is now developing a plan to modernise and strengthen the NTC.

The IMF reforms offer Pakistan a major opportunity to fix structural problems. The report says that sustained reforms can raise GDP by up to 6.5 percent in five years. It argues that better governance will attract investors and improve confidence. It urges Pakistan to stay committed and avoid past mistakes. The IMF reforms provide a clear path that the country cannot afford to ignore.
