Pakistan has been re-elected as a member of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) executive council. The election took place during the OPCW’s 30th Conference of the States Parties (COSP 30) in The Hague. Pakistan will serve on the council from 2026 to 2028, reflecting its ongoing commitment to chemical weapons prohibition.
The OPCW executive council oversees the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and monitors member states’ compliance. Pakistan has been an active member of the OPCW since 1997. It has regularly facilitated inspections in its facilities and contributed constructively to international chemical weapons oversight.
Pakistan’s foreign office highlighted that the CWC is the world’s most successful arms control treaty. The executive council acts as the central body to enforce the treaty and ensure global compliance. Pakistan’s re-election signals international confidence in its positive role within the OPCW framework.
Officials noted that Pakistan’s participation in the council allows it to influence global policies on chemical weapons elimination. Furthermore, it strengthens Pakistan’s diplomatic standing in arms control and reinforces its image as a responsible member of the international community.
The foreign office said Pakistan’s continued presence on the council reflects its constructive engagement and credibility on global disarmament issues. Experts believe this role will allow Pakistan to further contribute to chemical weapons prohibition worldwide.
