Pakistan and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties, particularly through the GSP+ scheme, during the 7th Pakistan-EU Strategic Dialogue held in Brussels. The meeting, co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, underscored the importance of deeper economic cooperation for export diversification, job creation and sustainable growth.

According to the Foreign Office, the session offered a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and built on positive momentum from recent high-level engagements. Both sides emphasized their commitment to a broad-based and forward-looking partnership grounded in multilateralism, shared values, and mutual respect.

The dialogue also featured detailed exchanges on regional and global developments, including the situation in South Asia, Afghanistan, and the Middle East, alongside wider geopolitical issues. Pakistan and the EU stressed the need for coordinated efforts to promote peace, stability, sustainable development, and collective action on global challenges such as climate change and connectivity.

Both parties agreed to deepen cooperation under the Strategic Engagement Plan and to advance ongoing dialogues while identifying concrete areas for future collaboration. However, the discussion also highlighted the need for Pakistan to further improve compliance with the 27 international conventions tied to its GSP+ status — a point reiterated earlier by EU Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis.

Pakistan currently enjoys duty-free or reduced tariffs on two-thirds of its exports to Europe under the GSP+ scheme, which serves as a major driver of its export economy.
