The Punjab government has revised its Electric Taxi Scheme, reserving 100 electric vehicles for women through a balloting process. Another 200 EVs will be allocated to male drivers, marking the first dedicated share for women in the province’s history.
Corporate taxi operators will now receive 800 vehicles instead of the previously allocated 1,000. The revised formula aims to distribute more EVs to individual drivers while maintaining support for commercial operators.

Initially, the plan offered 100 electric vehicles to individuals and 1,000 interest-free taxis to corporate operators. Transport authorities said the updated approach allows broader participation at the citizen level and encourages gender inclusivity.
The scheme follows last year’s announcement to launch an electric taxi service across Punjab, modeled after China’s successful EV taxi program. The Transport Department engaged multiple electric vehicle manufacturers, with the Deewan Group and NRTC expressing interest in participation.
