Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to speed up PIA privatisation with full transparency. He stressed clear strategies to increase airworthy aircraft and ensure timely departures. Operational efficiency and service reliability remain top priorities. Officials confirmed that all phases of privatisation will follow strict rules.
The Privatisation Commission has prequalified four parties for the sale of a 75 percent PIA stake. Management control will transfer to the buyer, but the airline’s name and branding must remain unchanged. The bidding phase is set to start soon. This move aims to modernize the national carrier while protecting its legacy.

Four prequalified entities include Fauji Fertiliser, Air Blue, and two consortiums led by Lucky Cement and Arif Habib Corporation. Recently, AKD Group Holdings joined the Arif Habib consortium. Officials explained that these parties meet all requirements to run the airline efficiently. The government will monitor compliance closely during privatisation.
PIA plans to expand its fleet from 18 to 38 airworthy aircraft by 2029. Currently serving over 30 cities, the airline targets more than 40 destinations in the next four years. The expansion is part of the broader business plan to improve connectivity and operational reliability nationwide.
