Pervez Ali Chandio

Rayees Ellahi Buksh Chandio remembered

Published on: November 21, 2025 1:47 AM

Rayees Ellahi Bukhsh Chandio was not just a man-he was a movement. Born in the village of Jhangara, Taluka Sehwan, in the influential household of Rayees Ghulam Haider Chandio, he emerged as a charismatic and visionary figure whose legacy continues to illuminate the path of social justice, education, and political consciousness in Sindh.

A Life Rooted in Service and Wisdom

From the very beginning, Rayees Ellahi Bukhsh Chandio stood out. Professionally a teacher, he belonged to a respected zamindar family, yet his heart beat for the common people. His intellect, combined with a magnetic personality, enabled him to connect across ideological, social, and religious divides. He wasn’t just a thinker-he was a doer. Whether it was education, healthcare, or employment, he worked tirelessly to uplift the underprivileged of his community.

He was often described as a “one-man department”-a title that reflected his ability to tackle diverse challenges with unmatched dedication. His presence was a beacon of hope, and his leadership inspired many to rise above their circumstances.

Political Influence and Visionary Leadership

Rayees Ellahi Bukhsh Chandio was not driven by the desire to become a leader himself, but rather to create leaders. He was a close companion and classmate of the late Syed Abdullah Shah, who later became the Chief Minister of Sindh. Their bond was so strong that the Chief Minister’s House became a second home to him.

His influence extended beyond personal relationships. He played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of Jamshoro district, laying the foundation for a progressive leadership that still echoes today. Families and communities from Sehwan, Jhangara, Baajara, and Bhaan were part of this awakening, with Chandio’s name standing out as a symbol of unity and purpose.

The Tragic End: A Martyr for Peace

On 23rd November 1995, at the age of 59, Rayees Ellahi Bukhsh Chandio was martyred in a brutal terrorist attack in Karachi. He was traveling in the car of Syed Ehsan Ali Shah, brother of the then Chief Minister, when MQM-affiliated terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. All passengers in the vehicle were killed in the attack.

His death was not just a personal loss to his family and friends-it was a blow to the soul of Sindh. Yet, even in martyrdom, his legacy lives on. His life remains a testament to courage, intellect, and unwavering commitment to justice.

Legacy That Lives On

Three decades later, Rayees Ellahi Bukhsh Chandio is remembered not just for what he did, but for what he stood for. His vision, his sacrifices, and his relentless pursuit of a better society continue to inspire generations. In the hearts of the people of Sehwan and beyond, he remains a guiding light-a true chiragh in the darkness.

Let this 30th anniversary be not just a remembrance, but a call to action-to carry forward his mission of unity, education, and empowerment.
