
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched the country’s largest tax audit, targeting over seven million income tax returns to enhance transparency, boost revenue, and expand the national tax base.
The audit will utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools alongside advanced Microsoft Excel filters and formulas to identify taxpayers who may have underreported income or paid fewer taxes than previous years.

Around 8,000 Inland Revenue officers and 4,000 auditors will participate in the program, which will unfold in three phases, starting with commercial and industrial sectors, followed by companies, then individual taxpayers.
Officials highlighted that the initiative aims not only to detect discrepancies but also to encourage voluntary compliance, with AI helping accelerate the process, reduce manual errors, and support data-driven decision-making.

The FBR emphasized that integrating digital tools reflects a commitment to modernizing Pakistan’s tax system while holding individuals and companies accountable for their financial obligations efficiently.
This audit is expected to strengthen governance in taxation, improve overall compliance, and provide a model for leveraging technology in public sector financial oversight across the country.
