Turkish military plane crashes in Georgia, rescue underway

Published on: November 11, 2025 10:09 PM

A Turkish C-130 military cargo plane crashed in Georgia shortly after taking off from Azerbaijan on Tuesday, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation. The crash occurred near the Georgia-Azerbaijan border, and authorities from both countries quickly mobilised teams to reach the wreckage. Turkiye’s defence ministry confirmed the incident and said coordination was underway with Georgian officials to ensure swift access to the crash site and recovery of those on board.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was delivering a speech in Ankara when he received the news, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He offered condolences for what he called “our martyrs” and prayed for the victims. The president urged unity and resilience, saying the nation would face this difficult moment together. His emotional response underscored the gravity of the incident, which comes amid ongoing regional cooperation between Turkiye, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.

Officials have yet to confirm the number of people killed or injured in the crash. However, local media reported that both Turkish and Azeri military personnel were aboard the aircraft. Although details remain unclear, emergency teams have been dispatched to locate survivors and recover remains. Authorities said challenging weather and terrain conditions could affect rescue efforts but assured that all resources were being utilised to manage the crisis effectively.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said he had spoken directly with his Georgian counterpart, who was already en route to the crash location. Yerlikaya noted that coordination between the two governments was proceeding smoothly, and he praised Georgian authorities for their swift assistance. This cross-border collaboration highlights the close ties among the neighbouring countries, particularly in responding to emergencies and security matters.

While the cause of the crash remains unknown, aviation experts have begun investigating possible technical or environmental factors. The C-130 Hercules, a reliable workhorse of military logistics, has a strong safety record, but older models sometimes face maintenance challenges. As the investigation continues, both nations have pledged transparency and full cooperation to uncover the truth and prevent future tragedies. The coming days are expected to bring more clarity about the circumstances surrounding this devastating accident.
