Meta has received a cease-and-desist letter from the Motion Picture Association (MPA), demanding the company immediately stop using the term “PG-13” on its platforms, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The dispute began last month when Meta stated that teens on Instagram would, by default, only see content adhering to PG-13 movie ratings. The MPA responded two weeks later, calling the claim “literally false and highly misleading,” emphasizing that its movie-rating system cannot be equated with Meta’s AI-driven content restrictions.

In its letter, the MPA stressed that decades of public trust in its rating system could be undermined if Meta continues its labeling. The organization expressed concern that any misrepresentation could cause users to question the credibility of its ratings.
Meta responded by clarifying that it has never claimed teen accounts are officially PG-13 rated or certified by the MPA. The company noted that its content restrictions are “guided” by PG-13 standards and argued that its use of the term falls under fair use.
