Shehbaz Sharif heads to Malaysia for key visit

Published on: October 5, 2025 2:31 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday to begin a three-day official visit at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi. The visit is seen as an important step toward strengthening Pakistan’s ties with Malaysia across multiple sectors.

During the trip, both countries are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering a wide range of areas. These include trade, education, energy, telecommunications, infrastructure, investment, and the rapidly growing Halal industry. Officials believe the agreements will create new opportunities for bilateral growth and help both nations tap into global markets more effectively.

The visit comes almost a year after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s trip to Pakistan in October 2024, during which he received the Nishan-e-Pakistan award. The honor recognized his efforts to strengthen Islamic brotherhood and expand cooperation with Pakistan. This reciprocal visit by Shehbaz Sharif underscores Islamabad’s commitment to deepening engagement with Kuala Lumpur.

Pakistan and Malaysia already share strong economic ties through the Malaysia-Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA), signed in 2007. The free trade framework has facilitated cooperation in goods, services, and investment flows. Moreover, MPCEPA has expanded into intellectual property protection, healthcare, tourism, construction, and information technology, making it a vital foundation for future collaborations.

With this visit, both nations aim to move beyond traditional diplomacy and focus on tangible outcomes that directly benefit their economies. By signing new agreements and reinforcing old ones, Pakistan and Malaysia are expected to build a stronger partnership that enhances growth, creates employment, and supports long-term regional prosperity.
