The visit comes almost a year after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s trip to Pakistan in October 2024, during which he received the Nishan-e-Pakistan award. The honor recognized his efforts to strengthen Islamic brotherhood and expand cooperation with Pakistan. This reciprocal visit by Shehbaz Sharif underscores Islamabad’s commitment to deepening engagement with Kuala Lumpur.
Pakistan and Malaysia already share strong economic ties through the Malaysia-Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA), signed in 2007. The free trade framework has facilitated cooperation in goods, services, and investment flows. Moreover, MPCEPA has expanded into intellectual property protection, healthcare, tourism, construction, and information technology, making it a vital foundation for future collaborations.
